Abdulhadi al-Khawaja has been refusing food for over two months in protest against the life sentence given to him for his role in pro-democracy protests last year.
Bahrain has rejected an offer from Denmark to take al-Khawaja, who also holds Danish citizenship.
Activists said thousands of protesters walked down the Budaiya Road on the outskirts of the capital in a peaceful march, which was followed by clashes between security forces and groups of youths.

“Groups participated in legal rally in Budaiya on road to junction, blocked roads, and committed acts of vandalism. Police restored order,” the statement said.
Abdulhadi’s daughter Maryam tweeted that the family were “fearing the worst” as they waited for news of her father. Doctors have said the hunger striker’s condition is critical, with his organs are susceptible to failure at any time.
