These might not be Michelin stars, but the Surat civic body has started a gradation system for all licensed eateries in the city, the first such move by any municipal corporation in India, officials said.

The health department of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will now grade the 900-odd licensed eateries in the city, depending on their food, cleanliness, ventilation, sanitation, etc., to ensure clean and hygienic food for the denizens.

The idea, initiated by Surat Municipal Commissioner S Aparna, has been lifted from European countries. “This is practised in European countries. Surat is well known both for its food and food-loving denizens. Suratis are fond of eating out,” said Aparna, adding the drive will “foster a competitive spirit among hotels and restaurants”.

Civic officials repeat a local saying — Surat nu jaman ane Kashi nu maran (Food in Surat and death in Kashi — to drive home the point.

Eatery-owners have welcomed the idea and their elected wing has given its stamp of approval.

Southern Gujarat Hotel and Restaurant vice-president Arun Shetty said, “We have welcomed the decision and requested eatery-owners to participate in the drive so that people of Surat get clean and hygienic food.”

The Surat civic body, known for its phenomenal makeover after the plague outbreak, is considered an example in ensuring high standards of cleanliness in public places.

Civic officials intend to review and renew the gradation process annually. An appellate committee comprising members of hotel associations and civic officials has also been formed to look into the complaints from eatery-owners. “The entire process will be completed in the next few months and all eateries will get their gradation certificates,” says Aparna.
