SURAT: Diamonds worth Rs 5 lakh were stolen from a diamond polishing unit at Katargam here on Saturday night.

Lalaji Dhameliya, manager, Savani Brothers at Ambu Kaka Nu Makan at Ambawadi locality of Katargam, in his police complaint said he had left diamonds worth Rs 5 lakh in a office safe. When he opened his office at the polishing unit on Sunday, 200 carat diamonds worth Rs 5 lakh were found to be missing.

Police said the burglars entered the unit from a backside window after breaking its grill. They then broke open the lock of the manager’s cabin and also that of the safe using some instruments.

The area where the theft took place has many diamond polishing units.
