Kingdom condemns Israeli assault on East Jerusalem
Share

Saudi Arabia has expressed its deep concern over Israel’s continuing assaults on East Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque and its attempts to destroy, burn and weaken the foundations of the mosque, the third holiest place of worship for Muslims.

“The Israeli occupation authorities have been continuing their abhorrent methods of displacement and expulsion of Palestinians, arbitrary detention, ill-treatment of prisoners and settlement building,” said Abdullah Al-Muallami, the Kingdom’s permanent representative to the United Nations.

Addressing the UN Security Council on Monday night, he emphasized the Kingdom’s initiative to end the Arab-Israeli conflict. He referred to the Arab peace initiative originally proposed by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. The proposal was aimed at ending the Israeli occupation of Syrian Arab Golan Heights, the occupied Lebanese territories, and the establishment of a Palestinian state. “Although the initiative received a wide international acceptance, Israel rejected it,” he said.

He appealed to the Security Council to break the siege on Gaza, remove settlements, end occupation, and to recognize an independent Palestinian state on the territory of Palestine within the June 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital.

Speaking about the Iranian occupation of three UAE islands of Abu Musa and Greater and Lesser Tunbs, Al-Muallami said it is part of a series of threats directed by Iran against Arab Gulf countries. “The recent visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the island of Abu Musa represents an unacceptable provocation and intransigence that do not reflect good intentions,” he said, expressing the Kingdom’s support for the UAE’s pursuit of a peaceful resolution through negotiations or arbitration. He urged Iran to cooperate with the UAE to reach a fair solution to the island conflict.

Al-Muallami denounced the carnage being carried out by the Syrian military against its people. “Despite the issuance of Security Council Resolutions No. 2042 and No. 2043 on the deployment of international observers to monitor developments…the Syrian regime is still engaged in violence against its people, using heavy machinery, bombing residential neighborhoods, villages, and complexes of citizens,” he said. The Syrian regime is not fulfilling the commitments made to UN peace envoy Kofi Annan, he added.

The Saudi official called on the Security Council not to allow the Syrian regime to exercise its attempts of procrastination and evasion of obligations, adding that it should not grant the regime one period of time after another at the expense of Syrian lives.

New transport system aims to generate major savings

The approval of the Council of Ministers on Monday of the implementation of the Public Transport Project (PTP) in Riyadh came after the High Authority for the Development of Riyadh (HADR) had formulated a comprehensive plan.

This plan stipulated the establishment of road networks for public transport using buses and electric trains. The authority also completed the engineering designs, technical specifications and blueprints for the two projects.

In the first phase of the plan a rail network would be constructed on the axis of King Abdullah Road with a length of 17 kilometer. It would start from King Khaled Road on the west to Khaled bin Al-Waleed street to the east, and include 11 stations. The network would also run on the axis of Al-Olaya-Al-Batha Street with a length of 25 kilometer, extending from the northern to the southern ring road. When the train would reach its final destination at the headquarters of the department of public transport it would have passed 25 stations.

This phase would also include the establishment of a road network for buses covering the entire city to ensure people with safe transport.

The bus network would complement that of the train and would be established on four levels. It would consist of a nucleus network for high-capacity buses, circular networks to provide transport around the downtown area by medium-capacity buses. A secondary network would service medium to low capacity vehicles and a local network would provide public transport on the cluster of roads of the various districts.

The authority had earlier revealed that the economic feasibility of the PTP in the city would exceed the cost of its construction and operation by more than threefold. The annual economic returns of the plan were expected to be more than SR8 billion. The plan would also provide more than 450,000 direct and indirect job opportunities during the time of its execution.
