In a talk to Pilate Jesus said that everyone that is true will hear his voice, which made Pilate ask Jesus what is truth. That question actually expressed his view on life as something which has no truth and where everything is made of ideologies or necessities which people make according to their political, social or economic status which are also product of such constructions. That makes then right or wrong only relative things.
Pilate asked the question which most of people ask themselves during their life. Some asking from religious point, some from philosophical but all looking for an answer. Pilate asked to show his cynicism and Jesus answered with silence which was maybe direction that may lead to an answer. Pilate tried to ask, reacting in a way that most people would, which is within the limits of his understanding and ideology. For him as for many of us, truth is reality we see around us.
Pilate is bonded with worldly and limited with rules by reality he lives in while Jesus watching everything from a different point of view and speaking seeing things from that other realm. Between them is a huge difference in view, that big that no matter what Jesus would say Pilate wouldn’t understand, and that is why Jesus replied with silence.
If we see truth as all that spreads from whole reality, to God and down to earth then we realize that truth is actually found beyond the limits of reality as we know it which is dimension that goes from point of existence on this world and reaches God. That is why Jesus is showing that truth is something very deep and powerful, rooted in the essence of existence and reality and no matter what he would speak wouldn’t be deep enough or strong enough to show spiritual power that connects everything that truth is.
In Bible “For man does not live by bread alone but from every word that proceeds from God.” (Matthew 4:4) as well as in Qur’an “God is the Truth.” (Qur’an 22:6) is said that God is the truth. “And he who brings the truth and (he who) accepts it as the truth….” (Qur’an 39:33) God is who made the connection between those who bring the truth, which means the Prophets, and those who accept it. “Every one that is of the truth hears my voice.” (John 18:37) People who accept the truth are actually those who are on the same path as prophets and able to hear and understand it.
Qur’an connects truth with reality but on many levels. Jesus is connected to reality as part of all realities and he actually shows that truth in every word he said, each look and even with silence. That truth is manifested through all his deeds, from healing, harsh word, awakening, silence or as guiding. Jesus is actually the word of God placed into Mary’s womb. That is why on Pilate’s question ”what is truth” the answer would be God’s word which is Jesus, and alone Jesus’ presence was the answer.
