Since June 2012, reportedly 20,000 Burmese Muslims are brutally persecuted, displaced and killed in the name of religion, race and ethnic cleansing. The actual reason for this ongoing sectarian violence in Burma (Myanmar) is unknown. It is reported that these riots started on 3rd June 2012 when 11 Rohingya Muslims were taken out of the bus and killed by the Burmese Army and the Buddhist Rakhines in the Northern Rakhine state of Burma (formerly known as Arakan). According to Amnesty International , since 1978, the 800,000 Rohingya Muslims have suffered from severe human rights violation as they are considered as illegal immigrants, non citizens and foreigners.

The history unfolded to Burmese about the forced conversions of Buddhists under the Mughal rule which developed anti- Muslims sentiments. In 1930′s, there were “Anti-Muslim’s” and “Burma for Burmese Only” campaigns under the British rule. The Buddhists denied Muslims claim that there ancestors were settled in Burma since 9th Century and practically barred Rohingya Muslims from being recognized as Myanmarese nationals under the constitution. After 1948 Independence, The Burma Muslim Congress was cut out from the AFPFL (Anti-Fascist Peoples’ Freedom Party) and was later dissolved. There was expulsion of Muslim soldiers from army and strict reservations were imposed on cow slaughter and pilgrimage.

The 1982 Citizenship Act does not recognize the Rohingya as one of Burma’s national races and exclude it from the citizenship right. Under such drastic circumstances, the rich Muslims gradually took refugee to neighbouring states like Bangladesh and India. The poorer Muslims were left in a deplorable condition at the mercy of Buddhists who deprived them from all socio-economic and political rights. There were also anti Muslims riots in Mandalay (1997) and Taungoo (2001) in the name of racial violence. The situation aggravated after 9/11, as violence was now committed in the name of Islamic extremism against the Burmese Muslims.

With such appalling history, the present violence seems a thread to the knot, as the Burmese are determined to repeat the holocaust for ethnic cleansing of Muslims from their Burmese soil. Myanmar’s President Thein Sein clearly mentioned that there are two tangible solutions: either to expel all Rohingya Muslims to a third country or sending them to refugee camps under the oversight of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which has been denied. Even the Bangladesh has refused to accept any Burmese Muslims refugees and has banned aid to them. No permanent solution has yet been formulated to resolve their identity crisis, issue of citizenship and settlement rights of Burmese Muslims.

At this juncture, the helpless and disappointed Burmese Muslims, one of the largest stateless community in Asia, look toward world community for a practical solution but unfortunately the world has turned a blind eye to the massacre of Burmese Muslims. No serious action has been taken by UN and OIC in real terms. USA, Human Right Organizations and Peace activists seem less interested to bother about the Burmese Muslims genocide. The media reports, photographs and videos are termed as faked/ invalid and less western media coverage is given to the issue.

Why so? Just because these are not Americans, Israelis or Westerners instead ill-fated Muslims who are being butchered at the hands of monks? Is it just an internal affair of the Burma? Is USA and UN too busy placating new Burmese democratic government? Where is the peaceful compassion of Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu kyi gone while speaking about the Rohingya Muslims? Is social reform and protection of human and ethnic rights not part of Burmese reform agenda?

These are the queries which need an immediate response by the western world. The cold and inhuman response by the western community has agitated the Muslims all over the world, who have strongly condemned the genocide of their Burmese Muslims brothers and sisters. The world wide rallies/protests and public demonstrations are staged demanding Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) and UN to intervene for the cause of Burmese Muslims.

The Secretary General of OIC has asked for the unity and co operation of Muslim Ummah and has proposed an urgent request to the Human Rights Council to send a fact-finding mission to Burma to investigate the massive violence perpetuated against the Rohingya Muslims. Countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, France, Turkey and Pakistan have expressed deep concern over the loss of life and property of Rohingya Muslims, condemned the ethnic clashes in Burma and have called for hastening the process of rehabilitation and settlement of Rohingya Muslims.

In the latest chapter of a public conflict stretching back to 2010, a former hostess at a hotel restaurant in Disney’s California Adventure theme park filed a federal lawsuit against the company Monday, saying she was harassed and discriminated against at work because she is Muslim and a North African Arab.
Imane Boudlal, 28, is a U.S. citizen born in Morocco. She started working at the Storytellers Cafe in Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa in 2008. Two years later, Boudlal asked to wear the hijab, or headscarf worn by observant Muslim women, at work, but said she was suspended after rejecting Disney’s costume alternatives and offers of four backstage jobs away from the public eye. She filed a 2010 complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which is still pending.

From the beginning, according to a statement by the ACLU of Southern California, which is representing Boudlal, “her coworkers and supervisors subjected her to anti-Muslim and anti-Arab slurs, such as ‘terrorist,’ ‘camel’ and others. She reported the harassment to her managers, who admitted a problem but never took action.”

“Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has a history of accommodating religious requests from cast members of all faiths. We presented Ms. Boudlal with multiple options to accommodate her religious beliefs, as well as offered her several roles that would have allowed her to wear her own hijab,” said Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown in a statement. “Unfortunately, she rejected all of our efforts and has since refused to come to work.”

Disney’s strict dress code prohibits “cast members,” or employees who meet the public, from wearing religious items. But the company has worked to accommodate employees’ concerns by allowing such modifications as longer sleeves and skirts instead of pants. In 2004, Disney World in Florida was sued by a female Muslim employee who wanted to wear a headscarf to work. The case was settled out of court and the terms were confidential.

In a similar Disneyland case in 2010, a 22-year-old Muslim woman who said the company wouldn’t let her wear a religious headscarf during her five-month internship as a vacation planner or ticket seller reached an agreement with the theme park, and wore a Disney-provided blue scarf and beret-style hat to work.

Boudlal’s case asks for a permanent injunction requiring Disney not to prohibit employees from wearing hijabs, plus punitive damages and anti-harassment training for company employees that includes Muslim issues.

 Shots fired from a pellet rifle damaged a mosque in a northern Chicago suburb, authorities said Saturday. No one was injured.

A Muslim civil liberties group said Saturday that the shots damaged an outer brick wall of the Muslim Education Center in Morton Grove on Friday night shortly after worshippers observing the holy month of Ramadan broke their daily fast.

Morton Grove Police Chief Mark Erickson said Saturday a security guard at the center heard a projectile hit an outside wall of the building at 9:20 p.m. Police were called, Erickson said, and the department began to investigate. The department is working with the Cook County State Attorney’s office, he said.

“This is obviously an alarming situation,” said Ahmed Rehab, director of the Chicago branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “The weapon allegedly used in this incident is powerful enough to kill, and the projectiles reportedly came within inches of the head of the security guard on duty.”

The shots were heard by worshippers outside the center, which serves as both a mosque and a school.

“This is a school and a house of worship. … And we are being shot at,” said Mohammad Aleemuddin, president of the center. “Community members are terrified, especially children.”

The Muslim advocacy group said it believed the shots were fired by someone with a history of opposition to the mosque. It did not elaborate.

Erickson said police were told Friday night that windows at the mosque previously had been broken, but not reported.

The organization’s national headquarters issued a community safety advisory earlier in the week for American mosques after other incidents targeting Muslim houses of worship in Missouri and Rhode Island and after the deadly shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin on Aug. 5.

In one of those incidents, a mosque in Joplin, Mo., previously targeted by an arsonist burned down. In Southern California, pig legs were left in the driveway of a house used as a place of worship pending construction of a mosque on the site in the city of Ontario — an offensive act because Muslims regard pigs as unclean.
Muslims in Chicago spoke out Friday against comments this week from U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh that they worried could help inspire attacks against mosques.

Walsh, a suburban Chicago Republican, told a town hall meeting on Wednesday that there are radical Muslims in the city’s suburbs and around the country “trying to kill Americans every week.”
