Zakat has a very deep interest in the welfare of humans and is not political thinking or anything of that sort, although it is concerned with socio-political avenues. It will set a person free from the problems of class structures, and from jealousy and mistrust of another person, or envy of what they may have.

In Islamic thought private business growth is not despised or penalised, but it certainly does not look favourably on wealth that is gained simply for the gaining of wealth or the pleasure of its owner. This is not tolerated, and therefore, Zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam, is valued to remove any thoughts of greed.

The line between the haves and have-nots is very moderate in Islam, as it is with all the situations, but all should never forget that each and everyone is simply a caretaker of any wealth, for it all belongs to god at the end, including the owner, if he or she follows the creed faithfully.

A Muslim who is fortunate enough to own wealth calculates his or her own Zakat, and this is not a Government tax, but a personal one which has been decreed by God. This is taken from whatever is left after basic needs such as personal expenses, taxes to the State of whatever. Of this remnant, a percentage of two and one half is taken and given. It is not necessary to let others know how much that the person has given, but should that encourage others to give, then it is permitted.

Seeing as Man is supposed to be civilised by nature, or community-minded, it stands to reason that he should group together and then support each member of the group. This includes making sure that the haves support the have-nots, a concept made clear in the Qur’an or Holy Book. Though it is not considered support, but rather a sharing and accepting without obligation on either side.

It is also a type of freedom from the curse of selfishness, according to the Prophet Mohammad. Once Zakat is given, then the burden of feeling greedy is gone and gratitude fills the heart to God for freeing the person from the unhealthy emotions.

On the other hand, the recipient is also granted freedom by being given this gift, because it removes all feelings of envy and jealousy or covetousness. So both of the parties involved are released from negative feelings and rewards with harmonious thoughts towards each other.

Zakat is seen as one of the most essential establishments of worship that is directed at trying to have a balance between poor and rich. If it is adhered to, then the divisions that usually form between these two will not be able to gain a stable foothold and hopefully will eventually be eradicated. The poor have always been with us, but this goes a way to preventing it growing to absorb all Mankind.

The Holy book or Qur’an of the Islamic people has some verses that are possible to make Zakat possible for everyone to give something to the poor. If you can give another person a pleasant word and freely forgive them for their failures then it is far better than giving them the Zakat and afterwards being cruel to them.

The alms giving is a type of task given to the person as a type of worship. It is extremely important to the Muslim because it was ordered by God and therefore must be obeyed to fulfil a basic duty to Him. It dovetails neatly with prayers and other parts of the Muslim life.

When there is one person richer or wealthier than another, the richer person is obligated by God to help the less wealthy person or anyone in that position. This mainly refers to the destitute and poor, but can refer to anyone in other terms than simple monetary terms. Thinking of others in a compassionate way is another that will partially fulfil anyone’s duty to God.

Islam works on there being no poverty or want in a person’s life, according to God, and Zakat is a way to do this, and give worship to God as well. This then satisfies the main objective of both persons involved. That the want has been alleviated to which he or she thanks god, and the giver receives the spiritual pleasure of doing this for God.
